We work with both Approved Driving Instructors and Provisional Driving Instructors
What's the difference?
What is a Provisional Driving Instructor, and what is the difference between them and a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor?
A provisional driving instructor is someone who is still in training to become a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). They are allowed to give paid driving lessons once they have passed certain parts of the qualifying process (such as the theory and driving ability tests) and hold a trainee licence. Still, they must continue working under the supervision of a qualified instructor or driving school. The key difference between a provisional instructor and a qualified one is experience and certification: a qualified ADI has successfully passed all three parts of the instructor qualification process, demonstrating complete competence in both driving skills and teaching ability, whereas a provisional instructor is still gaining practical teaching experience in preparation for their final qualification exam.
What are the advantages of using a provisional driving instructor in comparison to a fully qualified instructor?
One of the main advantages of using a provisional driving instructor is cost—lessons with a trainee instructor are often cheaper than those with a fully qualified ADI, making them a more affordable option for learners who want to take plenty of lessons without a heavy financial burden. Another benefit is that provisional instructors are usually very eager to teach, since they are building up their experience and working towards qualification. This often means they put in extra effort to ensure their pupils understand clearly and progress well, as successful teaching contributes to their own development and reputation. Additionally, because provisional instructors are being closely monitored and mentored by a qualified ADI or driving school, learners indirectly benefit from the oversight and input of an experienced instructor as well. In some cases, this combination of fresh motivation, up-to-date training, and professional supervision can provide a more tailored and attentive learning experience compared to a fully qualified instructor who may be more experienced but less flexible in their approach.
How do provisional driving instructors access pupils?
Provisional driving instructors usually access pupils through the driving school or instructor they are training under, as part of their trainee licence agreement. Since they cannot work completely independently until they are fully qualified, they are often given learners by the driving school to help them build up experience. Some also attract pupils through lower lesson prices, which makes them appealing to learners who want to save money while still receiving structured tuition. In many cases, provisional instructors advertise through the same channels as qualified instructors, such as school websites, online platforms, or local adverts. Still, their work is always linked back to their supervising instructor or school for accountability and support. This ensures that pupils not only gain access to more affordable lessons but also have the reassurance that their instructor is being guided and overseen by an experienced professional.
